WRITERS ON READING AND WRITING

Every writer is also a reader. What does a writer read in order to write? And then, how does a writer see himself or herself in the vast territory that we call literature? Is there a purpose to his or her writing, other than just being read? This is what this blog is trying to define, more or less, with established and less-known profiles from all over the world. Enjoy!

T.E. G RAU T.E. Grau is an American writer of Cosmic Horror fiction. He has published a collection of short stories, The Nameless Dark , and a novella, They Don’t Come Home Anymore . What is your earliest reading memory? Probably a book called the Saggy Baggy Elephant  by Kathryn and Byron Jackson, one of those Little Golden Book releases from the 1940s/50s with the gold foil on the spine. I must have been 3 or 4 years old when I read it (obsessively so, as I did with all my books when I was very little), so this was the mid-70s. Another big one from a few years later was Professor Wormbog in Search for the Zipparumpazoo  by Mercer Mayer (1976), which was my first monster book. T ikuli Dogra is an Indian poet, fiction writer and blogger. Her first collection, Collection of Chaos , was published in 2014. What is your earliest reading memory? I found solace in books as a child. The characters were the imaginary friends around whom I would spin tales. My first memories are of my mother telling bed time stories and then later  a wonderful world of thin paperbacks and children's magazines opened, magazines like Chandamama, Nandan, Parag, Children's World, books from Children's Book Trust, Amar Chitra katha, Panchtantra, Jatak Kathayen etc. and soon I was drawn to Enid Blyton, Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys, a magazine called 'Liliput', The Children’s Encyclopedia and One Thousand Beautiful Things- chosen from The Life and Literature of the World, both by British Author Arthur Mee .
